PCOS

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder. It involves disrupted hormone signaling and irregular ovulation. In a typical cycle, hormones guide one follicle to mature and release an egg. In PCOS, ovulation does not occur normally. Multiple underdeveloped follicles form. They do not release an egg. This leads to hormonal imbalance. Progesterone levels drop. Androgens and estrogen increase. Cycles become irregular. PCOS is one of the most common reproductive endocrine disorders. It affects up to 10% of women of childbearing age. Over time, these changes disrupt coordination between the brain, ovaries, and endocrine system.

PCOS also affects metabolic health. It is closely linked to insulin resistance and excess insulin production. These changes contribute to weight gain. They also increase the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Symptoms may include acne, excess facial or body hair, hair thinning, ovarian cysts, mood changes, and unexplained weight gain. PCOS presents differently in each woman. Clinicians rely on a combination of findings for diagnosis. These include elevated androgen levels, irregular cycles, and polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. Many women first recognize PCOS when they experience difficulty with ovulation and fertility.

Conventional treatment focuses on symptom management. Options include oral contraceptives, insulin-sensitizing drugs such as metformin, and ovulation-inducing agents. These treatments can support ovulation and improve the chances of conception. However, they do not address the broader endocrine and metabolic dysfunction. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, PCOS reflects patterns that affect hormonal regulation, metabolism, and circulation. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine help regulate the menstrual cycle and support ovulation. They also calm the nervous system. With individualized dietary and lifestyle guidance, this approach helps address underlying imbalances and supports long-term reproductive and overall health.
